B (Bernoulli) Lighting
Greg Katz / Concept / Industrial Designer / 2019
ABOUT
B, short for Bernoulli, is an accent lighting concept. It explores the notion of light behaving like fluid; trickling through cracks, filling and expanding volumes and wearing away at matter. Bernoulli, refers to Daniel Bernoulli, whose work describes the mathematics surrounding fluid dynamics.
Simply hover your hand over B, and “push” down onto air to turn the light on. The more you push, the brighter the light glows. The bottom diffuser housing can be swapped for different modules, each resulting in a unique lighting effect.
Design Process
B’s industrial design is inspired by the natural degradation and fracturing of rocks. A Voronoi pattern is applied to B to invoke these natural elements. The Rhino plug-in, Grasshopper, is used to generate the complicated geometry and attractor curves are applied to tune pattern fading.
Construction
B is comprised of 3 subassemblies. Parts are designed with intent for diecasting, injection molding and metal forming processes. LEDs are mounted directly to the main PCB which nests above a PC diffuser. A separate mm-wave radar chip, fixed to the top of the device, is tethered. The device is powered through a 5 Watt DC power supply, which connects to B via a 5.5mm barrel.
